Elisabeth was the only child of pioneering parents James M. Tucker of Washington County, Pennsylvania (near Pittsburgh) and Abigail Long of Fentress County, Tennessee. They had married in Warren County on May 19, 1936. Elisabeth was born 9 months later, and her mother died when Elisabeth was 13 months old. Her father next married Carolyn Johnston and had several more children.

Elisabeth married John Waller Coghill, Sr. on August 11, 1858 in Warren County. They had 7 children: Benjamin, Caroline, James Tucker, John Jr, George Ellett, William Hawes, and Millicent Abigail. Benjamin died at the age of 17, James at 26, and Millient at 3 months. The others lived to adulthood and, except for Caroline, married and had families of their own.

Elisabeth predeceased her husband, having lived her entire life in the Roseville area.
