FAMILY HISTORY:

William Francis Williams was born July 10, 1844 in Morgan County, Missouri, the son of Joseph and Rachel (Laramore) Williams. He died April 1873 in Bates City, Lafayette County, Missouri.

Bill died twenty-three days before his last son was born. One story is that Bill died from complications from wounds received during the Civil War and another story is that he was shot by a "bushwacker" while tending some cattle.

At the age of 18, he joined the 29th Missouri Infantry (Union Army). This was at the outbreak of the Civil War. He served under Captain William Rogers in Company D. Other members of the 29th were his brothers, Andrew Jackson Williams, Alvin Peter Williams and Richard Williams. Another brother in the Union Army in Company I as was Thomas Benton Williams.

Bill was involved in the assault of Richmond and Vicksburg. He was wounded at the siege on Jackson and discharged for disability August 20, 1863. He returned home to Morgan County where he met and married Nancy Christine Lamon on December 13, 1863.

Bill and Nancy had five children, Alva Jackson, Joseph, William Edward, Thomas Elmer and Francis (Frank).

Bill and Nancy's Children:

1. Alva Jackson "Jack" Williams-Born March 12, 1865 in Bates City.
2. Joseph, born in 1868, was a deaf mute from having scarlet fever as a young child which caused him to loose his hearing. Joe was raised by his grandfather, Joseph Williams, after the death of his father and mother.
3. William Edward Williams born December 11, 1869.
4. Thomas Elmer Williams born April 29, 1871.
5. Francis C. "Frank" Williams May 23, 1873 in Bates City, Lafayette County, Missouri.

Bill Williams reenlisted September 7, 1864 in the 45th Missouri Regiment (Union) under Captain Anderson. He mustered out March 6, 1865, at the end of the war.

Nancy and Bill returned to Bates County and established a home where they lived until Bill died in April 1873.

Bill's Military Records indicate that he was 5 foot 8 inches tall. He had red hair, gray eyes and a light complexion.

Notes for Nancy Lamon Williams:

Nancy married Bill Williams when she was 15 years old and after his death she married Charles Potts who was 61 years old. They had three children together and Charles had several children from a previous marriage. Both Charles and Nancy died in 1880 of typhoid fever. Nancy died on Christmas Eve and her children were adopted by the Williams, Lamon, McRoberts and Newman families.
