Final Rites Held for 90-Year-Old Woman
Funeral services for Mrs. Charlotte Jane Norwood, who died in Portland Monday at the age of 90 years, were held in Macy’s chapel yesterday (Wednesday) at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. O.R. Vincent officiated. Burial was in the Masonic cemetery.
Mrs. Norwood was born on Jonathan’s creek, Haywood county, N.C., March 6, 1848, the daughter of Dr. Collins Howell and Mourning Howell. Dr. Howell was a Methodist minister.
She married James Alvin Norwood in Waynesville, N.C., Dec. 24, 1864. Mr. Norwood died Oct. 26, 1908.
Mr. and Mrs. Norwood came to Oregon Oct. 22, 1883, living near Salem and later in Salem before coming to McMinnville about 1907. Mrs. Norwood had been living in Portland since September.
Mrs. Norwood was the mother of 13 children, of whom nine survive. They are John W. Norwood, West Salem; William R. Norwood, Seattle; James A. Norwood, San Jose, Calif.; Mrs. E.C. Apperson, McMinnville; Mrs. William F. Dielschneider, McMinnville; Mrs. Carl Ehret, Oakland, Calif.; Mrs. J.R. Justice, Seattle; Mrs. Homer Gouley, Salem; and Mrs. W.H. Williamson, Portland.
Also surviving are a brother, Capt. Alden Howell, 97, Los Angeles; and a sister, Mrs. Frank Smathers, Waynesville, N.C.
Beside her 13 children, Mrs. Norwood had 44 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren, making a total of 117 descendants.
