Alden G. Howell enlisted in Company B, 7th Infantry Regiment North Carolina C.S.A. He was promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant on 9 May 1861 and again promoted to Full Captain (Estimated day of Promo) on 26 Apr 1862. He
Resigned Company L, 16th Infantry Regiment North Carolina on 24 Sept. 1862. He was later a Captain in Co. F in the 6th. North Carolina Cavalry in the American Civil War. These units were involved in most of the major battles in which the Army of Northern Virginia participated. 1861-1865
Captain Howell was very active in the promotion and development of his home town of Waynesville, N.C.. He was instrumental in opening the first public library in Haywood County as well as the first bank in Waynesville, N.C. in 1878. Captain Howell was also very active in the local Confederate Veteran affairs.
Captain Howell lived to the age of 106, making him the last surviving Confederate Officer as well as the oldest active Free Mason in the United States at the time of his death. He died in Los Angeles, California at the home of his daughter Flora Aldine.
