Monroe lost his hearing about age 6 suffering from spinal meningitis. He attended school in Ogden, Utah at the School for the deaf and blind. He could speak words and sentences at times but of course could not hear. He could read lips and always could communicate with his paper pad and pen which he always carried in his breast pocket. After school graduation he learned a trade and worked for many years at the Utah General Distribution Depot as a mechanic. He was very skilled.
Monroe could dance feeling the vibrations of sound. He maintained a fairly normal life in spite of this handicap.
He was very friendly and well liked by everyone.
