Funeral services for Violet Mae Converse will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 at Burley Funeral Chapel with Rev. Fred Renfroe officiating. Cremation will follow with private family inurnment at Fircrest Cemetery, Oak Harbor.
Violet Converse died Oct. 8, 2003, at her home in Oak Harbor at the age of 80. She was born Aug. 16, 1923, in Union City, Okla., to Charles and Iva (Bowen) Armstrong. Violet was raised in Oklahoma. She was married to William Gardner. Violet followed Bill's Navy career and in 1948, they were transferred to Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. Violet was employed by the Navy Exchange Dry Cleaners from 1955 to 1972. She and Bill were divorced and May 17, 1973, Violet married Albert T. Converse in Mount Vernon.
Violet enjoyed crocheting, knitting, cross-stitching and various other crafts. She was an avid reader, especially enjoyed her Bible. She loved collecting Teddy bears.
Mrs. Converse is survived by five step children; William and Carol Converse of Bllingham; Albert Converse of Crescent City, Calif.; Annette and Miles Fearing of Bellingham; Allen Converse of Shasta City, Calif., and Angela and Mark Horton of Oak Harbor. One brother Gib Armstrong of Altus, Okla. also survives her. Thirteen grandchildren and many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren also survive. Al preceded her in death in 1999.
