Benjamin L. "Benny" Backus, 89, of Canaan, died Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012, at his residence.

He was born July 11, 1922, in Jefferson County, the son of Benjamin J. and Carrie Lee Backus. He lived all of his life and attended school in Canaan. He was in the Navy from Jan. 30, 1945, to March 16, 1946, during World War II. He farmed for many years and was a self-employed truck driver. He retired after working 18 years at Jefferson Proving Ground. He was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church near Canaan and Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion. He enjoyed gardening.

He is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Humphrey of Canaan and Betty Gates of Columbus; one son, Vinson Backus of Canaan; one brother, Raymond Backus of Indianapolis; one sister, Loretta Stevens of Indianapolis; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen Barnes Backus, whom he married Feb. 27, 1943, and who died Aug. 3, 2010; his parents; and four brothers, Harold Backus, Dennis Backus, Walter Backus and Clarence Backus.

The funeral was at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre. Burial was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery near Canaan. A flag presentation was conducted graveside by Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion.

Madison Courier 1/9/12Mr. Benjamin L. "Benny" Backus, age 89, of Canaan, Indiana entered this life on July 11, 1922 in Jefferson County, Indiana. He was the loving son of the late, Benjamin J. & Carrie Lee Backus. He resided all of his life in Canaan and attended school there. Benny was united in marriage on February 27, 1943 to Mary Ellen Barnes. This happy union was blessed with two daughters and one son. He was inducted into the United States Navy on January 30, 1945 in Louisville, Kentucky. He rose to the rank of Fireman Second Class during World War II, serving aboard the USS Dayton. He was honorably discharged on March 16, 1946 from Great Lakes, Illinois, receiving the World War II Victory Medal, the American Area Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with one star. He farmed for many years and was a self employed truck driver. He later retired after 18 years of service with the Jefferson Proving Ground in Madison. He was a member of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church near Canaan and Jefferson Post 9, of the American Legion. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed being with his family. Benjamin died Sunday, January 8, 2012 at 9:15 a.m. at his home in Canaan, Indiana.

Benny will be missed by his loving daughters: Carolyn Humphrey of Canaan, Indiana, Betty Gates & her husband, David of Columbus, Indiana; his loving son: Vinson Backus of Canaan, Indiana; his loving grandchildren: Wade, Paula, Kyle, Rodney, Belinda, Brian & Jamie; his loving great grandchildren: Devon, Anthony, Taylor, Trevor, Nathan, Brady, Megan, Olivia, Stone, Kayla & Jamie Marie; his loving daughter in law: Julia Backus of Canaan, Indiana; his brother: Raymond Backus of Indianapolis, Indiana; his sister: Loretta Stevens of Indianapolis, Indiana; several nieces, nephews & other relatives. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 2:30 p.m., by the Rev. Ron Lee, at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana. Interment will follow in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Canaan, Indiana.

Friends may call Wednesday, from 1:00 p.m. until time of the service at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana.
