Elizabeth Adelaide "Addie" Taylor, wife of John Alexander Claiborne, was the first child of John Alexander Taylor (1818-1881) and Ann Bignall Peete Taylor (1822-1871). She attended State Female College in Greenwood, near Memphis from 1861 until the Civil War interrupted. She kept a diary beginning in August 1864 in school in Jackson, Tennessee, explaining how "we expected to finish our education in Memphis, but this cruel war blighted our hopes." Hers is a rare look at the Civil War from a young woman's viewpoint, with "all the soldier boys have left for the South. We will have a lonesome time as we have been with them so much lately." She continued her diary after she married John Alexander Claiborne December 16, 1866 and they moved to Arlington, Shelby County Tennessee where he cleared land while she waited for the birth of their son Alexander Claiborne December 1867. She confides to the diary of the joy she felt when they had time to walk to the creek in the evening, and pick crabapple blossoms, for "Mr. Claiborne is very busy building his fences." After the birth of her last son - William Anthony Claiborne, she became ill and they returned with their family to Brownsville. She continued faithfully with her fellowship in Tabernacle, and they once had to lift her on her cot through the window so she could attend the "Love Feast". It was her last. She died 1895. Children of Elizabeth Adelaide and John Alexander Claiborne were: 1. Alexander Claiborne 1867, married Fairy Kennedy; 2. John Taylor Claiborne (1867-1936) married Anna Baird; 3. Ann Peete Claiborne (1872-1872); 4. Fred Battle Claiborne (1873-1938)married Maybelle Fleet; 5. Lewis Edmond Claiborne(1875-1948) married Kathleen Craig; 6. Mary Elizabeth Claiborne (1878-1968) missionary to China; 7. Adelaide Claiborne (1881-1890); 8. William Anthony Claiborne (1887-1960) married Lottie Lou Lyle, Chattanooga, Tennessee.
