Fred Battle Claiborne was the son of John Alexander Claiborne and Elizabeth Adelaide Taylor of Brownsville, Haywood County Tennessee. He was named for his Aunt Martha Claiborne Battle's husband, Dr. Frederick Battle, who were their neighbors. In Hardeman County Tennessee, October 11, 1895, he married Inez Maybell Fleet. She was the daughter of Presley T. Fleet and Francis "Fannie" T. Buffaloe of Hardeman County. Her father died about 1876 and she became the stepdaughter of Arthur Kemp Stallings. Fred and Maybelle had children: Francis T. Claiborne 1896 (married Eugene Smith 1923); Fredibel Claiborne 1899 -1980 (married Raymond A. Craig of Sunflower County Mississippi); Adelaide Elizabeth Claiborne 1901 (worked for TVA Knoxville); Martha Lucille Claiborne 1904-1962 (married first J. Sidney Jones 1924, second Dr. William Hugh Spruell 1933); George Battle Malone Claiborne 1907-1968 (U.S. Navy, married Virginia Grimes and died Dekalb County Georgia 1968); Mary Alice Claiborne 1915 (married Jack Seabrook)(second married and divorced Richard Jerome Sappington, El Paso Texas). About 1930 Fred and Maybelle divorced. He lived with his brother John Taylor Claiborne on his dairy farm in Bolivar until his illness became severe. He died in Memphis, Tennessee at John Gaston Hospital while in the residence of his ex wife Maybelle and his son George. She continued to live at 1454 Madison, Memphis Tennessee until her death about 1956.
