My grandpa "Papa" always had orange slice candy and sugar sticks on the coffee table. He could peel an apple without breaking the ring. Like his father, he was farmer and raised watermelons. He had a coon dog named Crook. He would tree a possum but my grandpa never had the heart to kill any. My grandma was only 16 when they ran off to GA to get married. Their wedding gifts were things like a bag of corn seed and chickens. During the depression of 1938, Papa moved the family to Oakland CA to find work. Later the moved to Los Angeles County where they lived many years in Hawthorne, CA. They retired back to Clay County AL for a while but missed their boys so they moved back to CA. My grandparents were married 66 yrs. We had wonderful times at their home. They taught me so much and I miss their love very much.
These words were on my grandpa's memorial card and give me peace in knowing we will soon see each other again:
"Have faith that I am nearer than your dreams and fondest longings, for the God of love shall keep all kindred spirits close together though the misty vale between this world and that to come that keep us from each other's sight for a few precious moments." Author unknown.
