Roy was the next to youngest child of John Warren Carpenter and Irena Viola Dean. He was married to Doris Kennedy and had two children: Doris Ann (who preceded him in death) and Jimmy. Roy was a Southern Baptist minister and pastored many churches in Calhoun, Clay, and Talladega Counties. He raised miniature dachshunds and tropical fish. Roy always wore something red: He said it symbolized the blood of Christ.
