Mary Alice Phillips was the youngest child of Wyley Phillips and Minnie Rowe. She was born 1 May 1861 in Brier Patch, Bulloch County, Georgia. Both of her parents died before her 10th birthday, and she went to live with her uncle William Rowe and his family.
When Mary Alice was 19 years old, she married Ezekiel M. Miller on 3 March 1880. Ezekiel's family lived very near William Rowe and his family. Mary Alice and Ezekiel were married 55 years before his death in 1935 and they had 12 children together:
