Grandma Kennedy was born Mary Alice Miller on 26 Sep 1897 in Statesboro, Georgia, to Ezekiel and Mary Alice Phillips Miller. She was named after her mother and was called Allie. She was the 9th child of 12 children born to her parents. Her 11 siblings were:
William Daniel ‘Billy’ b 1881
Sarah ‘Mimie’ b 1882
Benjamin Wyley b 1885
Robert Reid b 1887
Catherine Lurine ‘Renie’ b 1889
Elisha Clayton ‘James’ b 1891
Jonathon Iverson ‘John’ b 1893
Nollie Ezekiel b 1895
Janie Pearl b 1900
Mamie Oveta b 1903
Auley Edmond b 1905

Allie met Troy Kennedy in 1916 at a church meeting in Bulloch County. They were married on Sunday, Sep 24, 1916. She was 18 and he was 17. Their marriage lasted 73 and a half years and produced 3 children, 8 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 28 great-great grandchildren, and 7 great-great-great grandchildren. A great legacy of love…….

Between 1919-1935, they lived at 157 Burkhalter Rd in Tattnall County and began their family there.
Their three children were:

1-Vernon Ovey Kennedy, born 5 May 1919 in Tattnall County. He married Nina Deloach.
2-Mary Evelyn Kennedy Alderson, born 24 Mar 1922 in Tattnall Co. She married Steve Alderman.
Note: As of this writing in Jun 2017, Evelyn is 95 and still living. She has shared many stories of her parents and grandparents.
3-William Troy Kennedy, Jr, born 1 Nov 1925 in Tattnall County. He married Mildred Harrelson.

Troy Kennedy was a farmer like his father and grandfather before him. He and Allie grew tobacco and corn as their cash crops and other vegetables to sustain their family through the year. Each week, water was gathered in large drums at the river and brought back by horse drawn wagon for the livestock. They would make a family trip out of it. Allie would pack a picnic lunch and the children could swim and play in the river till it was time to load the barrels.

After 1935, when their farm was no longer sustainable, Troy and Allie moved their family to Sink Hole in Bulloch County, near the Miller families. Troy and oldest son Vernon worked as a farm operator and laborer. Allie sewed, quilted, canned and worked in the home.

In 1942 the family moved to a home in Savannah on East Walburg Street. Allie and Troy worked for the Savannah shipyard. Troy with carpentry, building furniture and seats, while Allie covered and upholstered them. Later, Troy worked at Clark’s Construction, and they moved to 620 East 37th St, where they lived most of their lives in Savannah. Allie continued to sew, quilt and can.

They were members of the Primitive Baptist Church on 37th Street near their home for years, and often visited Anderson Primitive Baptist Church in the country, where they had been members while living in the country. Both Allie and Troy were buried at Anderson Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in the Kennedy plot near Troy’s parents, Molly Callaway and John Benjamin Kennedy.

Allie went to Statesboro to Brown’s Nursing Home after Troy’s death in 1990. She passed away 21 Jun 1993. We still love and miss them both.
