In speaking of the death of Mrs. Henry R. Gilbert, at her home in Villisca, April 24, 1900, the Villisca Leader says:
Harriet Esther Lawrence was born March 25, 1850 in Morgan County, Ohio and died at her home in Villisca April 24, 1900 at the age of 50 years, 26 days. When she was but a child of 5 years, her parents came west, settling in Adams County, Iowa, where she had made her home until moving here about a year and a half ago for the save of receiving medical attention.
May 30, 1871, she united in marriage to Robert Henry Gilbert. For about twenty years she has been an invalid, but has bore her suffering with a great degree of Christian patience and fortitude. During these many years, she has received every attention that could be suggested by the love of a husband, who has been all that a husband could be and of her family and friends. She leaves her companion of nearly twenty-nine years and her, who for ten years past has taken the place of a daughter of hers, also two brothers and three sisters. In all her suffering a Christian faith and hope, she has looked forward to this time when she might cross the river of death and stand upon the golden shores of eternity. She was a member of the Christian Church at Brooks, Iowa. Her great desire was to point others to Christ.
The funeral was conducted from the home Tuesday forenoon, by Rev. E. M. Johnston, of Elliott and the body taken to a cemetery near Brooks, when Rev. Petegrlae conducted the ceremony at the grave.
