Phoebe R. Lawrence was born in Morgan County, Ohio June 10, 1847. She departed this life March 2, 1903 at her home west of Corning. She came to Adams County in 1855, and was married to Mahlon Miller December 3, 1885. He husband and one daughter, Mrs. Maude Carothers survive her. She united with the Episcopal Church in Brooks, February 1878 and continued to be a faithful member of the same until the time of her death. She was a good neighbor, a faithful and inspiring wife to her husband whose devotion to her has grown with the years. Her affection for her daughter was as remarkable as that for her husband. She was one of the women who have helped to make Iowa a glorious state. In her church relations, she was always active and loyal. Her home has been the home of generations of itinerant ministers and none were more thoughtful in their kindness than she. Her death was a triumph instead of sadness and regrets; there was peace and joy and praise, and she told her husband of the presence of angels with her. "Blessed are the death that die in the Lord" is true for her. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. W. H. Shipman of Corning in the North Class M.E. Church. Her remains were interred in the Walnut Grove Cemetery at Corning.
