James Rogers "Toil" Johnson and his brothers Marion Francis "Gus" and John Henry marched to Georgia to join the confederacy. On the way there, Toil decided they should change their last name to Johnson, dropping the "t" in Johnston. According to family records, everyone else must have followed suit, because from then on the family is know as Johnson. Gus was wounded and died at Vienna and John Henry survived to raise ten children.

Toil was born in 1843, in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia and joined the confederacy in Georgia. According to family records, he was killed in a Battle at Gettysburg on January 6, 1863 at the age of twenty. He was buried with the rest of the confederate soldiers who fell during that battle.

Toil was not married.
