James Rogers Johnston, Sr, was born on August 16, 1813 in Putnam County, Georgia to Sarah Grizzel and William Johnston (1787-1871).

On July 4, 1836 in Wetumpa, Elmo County, Alabama, James Rogers married Amanda Ivey born March 12, 1823 in Liberty County Georgia, the daughter of Anna Rebecca Edwards (born 1796) and John Ivey (born 1780).

To this union the following 11 children were born:

John Henry born 21 Nov 1841 died 15 Aug 1928, survived the Civil War, age 24 when war was over.

James Rogers "Toil", Jr born 1843 died 06 Jun 1863 in the Battle of Gettysburg, age 20.

Marion Francis "Gus" born in 1845 was wounded in 1864 during the Battle of Vienna, Spotsylvania County, VA and died there; he was age 19.

Mabel Jeanette born 01 Feb 1846 died 12 Dec 1937
Martha "Matt" born 1848 died 1879
William Joseph "Joe" born 1850 died 12 Oct 1910

Jefferson Davis born 05 Jan 1861 died 11 Jun 1904
Robert Lee born 13 Aug 1864 date of death unknown.

Note: When Toil and his brothers marched to Georgia to join the confederacy, Toil decided to change his last name to Johnson, dropping the "t"; the rest of the family must have followed suit, as from then on the family name appears as Johnson in the family records, perhaps in memory of Toil and Gus.

James Rogers Johnson died on March 29, 1869 and was buried in the Arcadia Cemetery, his wife would join him there in 1910.
