Amanda Ivey was born March 12, 1823 in Liberty County, Georgia. Her parents were Rebecca Edward Halfacre, born about 1796 in Cornwall, England and John Ivey born about 1780 in Cornwall, England; it is not known when Rebecca and John immigrated to Georgia, it was after 1815, as their first son, John, Jr was born about 1815 in Illogan, Cornwall, England and Amanda was born 8 years later in Liberty County, Georgia.

On July 4, 1836, Amanda married James Rogers Johnston Sr, the son of Sarah Grizzel and William Johnston (1787-1871) in Wetumpa, Elmo County, Alabama. To this union, the following twelve children were born:

1. Marion Francis "Gus" born 1838 died in 1864 after being wounded during the battle
of Vienna, Spotsylvania Courthouse, Virginia, age 19.
2. John Henry born 21 Nov 1841 died 15 Aug 1928, survived the Civil War.

6. Martha A born 1848 died 1879
7. William Joseph "Joe" born 1850 died 12 Oct 1910

11. Jefferson Davis born 05 Jan 1861 died 11 Jun 1904
12. Robert Lee born 13 Aug 1864

Amanda died on February 10, 1910 in Arcadia, Bienville Parish, Louisiana and was buried beside her husband Jim who preceded her in death on March 29, 1869.

*** Note: When Toil, Gus, and John Henry walked to Georgia to join the Confederacy, Toil decided to change his last name to Johnson, dropping the "t". The remainder of the family must have followed suit as from then on the records indicate the family name was Johnson, perhaps in memory of Toil and Gus who died in the war.
