Joseph Rommie ("Rom") Whistle was the youngest of eight children born to John Wellington Whistle and Annie Boarman Whistle.

His siblings were as follows:

Rom married Ruth Elah Gilmer. Together they had five children:

J.R. Whistle, 78, farmer, of Dell, Ark., died Saturday, February 7, 1981, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., after a lengthy illness. Mr. Whistle was a former resident of Steele. He was born in Kentucky and moved to Dell in 1916.

Services were held Monday, February 9, at the Baptist Church in dell. Officiating were Curtis Downs, Gene Dixon, and Steve Broome.

He leaves one son, Rom Whistle of Steele; four daughters; Sue Johnson of Manila, Ark., Carolyn Brown of Steele, Pat Waldrop of West Memphis, Ark., and Peg Hastings of Louisville, Ky.; one sister: Mrs. J. H. Brinn, of Blytheville; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Gilmer Whistle.
Pallbearers were Jimmy Leek, Gary Sanders, Barry Ray, William Waldrop, Koehler Blankenship, Billy Griggs, and Donald Barnes.

Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery in Blytheville.
