Louis Burchard was born in the province of Hanover, Germany. He came to the US in 1852 with his father, August (abt. 1804-1884) and brother, also named August. Father August was in the tobacco business in Germany and in Gonzales. Louis served in the Civil War in Colonel Cook's Heavy Artillery on Galveston Island. He was a freighter, merchant, grocer and developer. He erected several buildings on St. George St. in Gonzales. He was a devout Presbyterian.

He married Augusta Bunte, one of five sisters. The Bunte family came to the US about the same time as the Burchard family. Both of her parents died soon after arriving in Texas. Louise and Augusta had the following children:

1. Charles August Burchard

2. Louis Burchard, Jr., who was connected with a wholesale produce house in Houston, married Pauline Schwander 27 Dec 1883 and had at least four children: Annie, Emil, Earl and Charles (1910 census, Houston, Harris Co., TX).

3. Frank F. Burchard (1864-1943), a dairyman at Gonzales, married Elizabeth Mangliers and had at least three children: Louis H., Willamea, and Marzella (1910 census, Gonzales Co., TX).

4. Bertha "Bettie" Burchard (1866-1956) married Gardner Clark Barber, no children. She then married Charles Volz. They had three daughters, Thelma, b. abt. 1897, Clara, b. abt. 1901, and Anna, b. abt. 1904 (census).

5. Amy, born about 1872 (1880 census, Gonzales Co., TX).

6. Clara Burchard (1873-1948) married F. H. Mangliers of Columbus, Texas, and had at least one daughter.

7. Sedonia Elnora Burchard (1878-1976) married Herman F. Heye of Gonzales, and had at least three sons: Burchard F., Charles A., and Hoyt H. (1910 census, death cert.).

8. Hoyte Hicks Burchard (1882-1930), of Harlingen, Texas, married Lualle Pendleton and had at least one daughter.

9. Mary Burchard, died young in 1885 (ref.: Mary's marker)
