Edward's correct last name was Hese. He later changed the spelling to Hayes before his marriage. His parents both died when he was young. He was raised by an Aunt and Uncle and slept in their barn. He came to Canada in 1861 to avoid Military service in the German Army.
He worked on the railroad, and in Lumber camps before coming to Michigan. He moved to Dearborne then he came to Owosso in 1868 when he was 21. He later owned a gravel pit and furnished sand and gravel to the city of Owosso. He drove a sprinkling wagon in the summers to control the dust on dirt streets. He was a Teamster for many years.
He saved his money and brought his sister Whilamine to the United States.
After 6-weeks of illness he passed away at his home in Owosso of Lung problems at the age of 67. He was laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery.
