Albert is the third of ten children and six sons, named for his uncle Albert J. Groen (1871-1963).
On April 15, 1937 he marries to Swanee Westerhuis in her parents' home of Platte. They spent most of their married life on a farm southeast of Platte in Darlington Township, where they got two daughters, Lorraine and Lee. Albert was on the board of the A.S.C. farm program until retiring in December 1982. He helped organize the Platte Rural Water district.
