Birth certificate, General Register Office of England: Annie Lydia North, born May 16, 1887 at Addlestone, Chertsey, Surrey, England; parents: James North, builder's laborer, and Georgianna North, formerly Clifton; informant: G. North, mother, of Addlestone, Chertsey.

According to Annie's only surviving daughter, Lydia Mary Doughty: before marriage, Annie was employed by the Rothschild family as a maid in their yacht, a ship, really. Annie was expert at setting tables and polishing silverware. Annie made seven round-trip crossings of the Atlantic Ocean between Liverpool, England and Halifax, Nova Scotia in the Rothschild's yacht. After what would be her final voyage in the Rothschild yacht, Annie met and married William McLeod Clachrie in Halifax.

Marriage license No. 16400 issued by the Province of Nova Scotia, November 20, 1906 to William McLeod Clachrie and Annie Lydia North, certifies they were married, November 22, 1906, by Thomas Fowler in the Presbyterian Church in Canada in the presence of Robert Thompson and Bessie Hollett.

Annie and William Clachrie returned to William's home town, Dalbeattie, Scotland, another Atlantic crossing, where their first two children, John and Elsie, were born. Unable to find suitable work as a painter, William emigrated to Westerly, Rhode Island, USA. In June 1910, Annie and the two children followed in the ship, SS Ivernia, yet another Atlantic crossing. In the Spring of 1911, a scarlet fever epidemic enveloped the town of Westerly, and Annie's two children, John, age 3, and Elsie, age 18 months, both perished. A few months later, Annie gave birth to her third child, daughter Annie Lydia. In 1914, daughter Annie Lydia, age 3, succumbed to pernicious anemia. Annie the elder, lived on to successfully raise six more children: William Jr.; James; Lydia Mary; Robert; and twins: Alan and Charles.

In 1932, Annie's father, James North, died in England. Annie, with two of her younger children, Lydia and Robert, made another round-trip Atlantic Ocean ship crossing to England to attend the funeral of her father.
