As a youngster, James was very active in the Boy Scouts of America, and took under his wing, a younger scout by the name of Merle Doughty, who would later become James' brother-in-law. James was a house painter, probably working for his father, William, who was also a house painting contractor. James served a hitch in the US Army during World War Two, and after discharge, was employed at the Westerly Hospital, Westerly, Rhode Island as a Maintenance Man. James North Clachrie married at least four times:
First is Betty Ruth Park, age 20, whom James married, July 2, 1938 at Indian River, Florida. There's no record this marriage produced children, and the marriage likely ended in a divorce before 1940 as Betty Ruth had three more marriages after James.
Second is Pauline Cameron Pitcher, age about 24, whom James married about 1942. They had one daughter. This marriage ended in divorce in 1954.
Third is Mary Emily Gardiner, whom James married in 1955; they had four daughters. This marriage ended in divorce.
Fourth is Joanne Crane Colt McGowan, whom James married in 1968. There's no record this marriage produced children, and the marriage ended in divorce in 1979.
In later years, James lived with a companion, Ida DePerry, and when James died in 1989, his remains were cremated and his ashes scattered by his companion, Ida; where she scattered the ashes is a mystery.
A memorial marker in the River Bend Cemetery Cremation Garden has both James and Ida's names on it.
