Charles Clifton Clachrie and his twin brother, Alan Bruce Clachrie, were born January 24, 1928, in the family home at 98 Mechanic Street, Pawcatuck, New London County, Connecticut, children of William McLeod Clachrie Sr. and Annie Lydia North. Charles was nicknamed "Groan" by his oldest brother, William Jr. (William Jr. nicknamed the twins Grunt and Groan.) Charles contracted polio at age 13, spent a year in an iron lung losing the use of both legs and used crutches for the rest of his life. Despite this inconvenience he was a long-time committee chairman of the Sea Explorer Ship Admiral H. O. Dunn of Westerly, Rhode Island; a founder and charter member of the Greenhaven Sailing Club; owner and operator of the Greenhaven Marina in Lower Pawcatuck, Connecticut; a member of the Westerly Yacht Club, the Westerly Power Squadron, Mystic Seaport Museum, and a 25-year member of Pawcatuck Lodge AF&AM. Charles died January 30, 1979 at Yale-New Haven Hospital, New Haven, Connecticut; his remains were cremated and scattered on the Pawcatuck River where he loved to sail. He is memorialized on the reverse of his parent's gravestone. Charles never married and had no children...that he knows of...as Uncle Chaz would often say!
