Curl Leathers was the 9th child and a twin, of sixteen children born to Curtis and Loretta Wallace Leathers on July 18, 1940, in Tullahassee, Oklahoma.

Curl accepted Christ at an early age. He attended Woodson Grade School and graduated from Carter G. Woodson High School in Tullahasssee, Oklahomna, receiving a basketball scholarship to Langston University in Langston, Oklahoma.

After moving to Bakersfield, California in 1962, Curl met the love of his life, Lordell Anderson. They later married and both joined St. John Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Tyree Toliver, developing a Christian family of seven children.

Curl was a hardworker, who worked for over thirty years with the Bakersfield City School District also as an Entrepreneur and was the proud owner of "Leathers Janitorial Service."

He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and "Pops." He was a mentor to many young men encouraging them for not only with his words of wisdom but by the way he lived his life. Curl was also known for expressing himself with "Curlisms", ...you sure look beautiful,...that is a beautiful hair do you have, ...nothing beats an understanding." He had many more "Curlisms" especially for family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Mary Helen Griffith, three brothers, his twin, Earl Leathers, Roy Dee Leathers, Cleo D. Leathers (Horse), one granddaughter, Mylia D. Hosey and one grandson, Tyrone Barner, Jr.

Curl leaves to cherish his memory and to celebrate his homegoing, his loving wife of 40 years, Lordell Leathers; seven children, Michael Earl Leathers, Constance Marie Sikes, Gwendolyn Lee Mason, Eric Jacoby Leathers (Esther), Cabrini Dell Leathers, Jim William Leathers (Sandra), and Mary Helen Barner; son-in-law, Tyrone Barner; twenty-five grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren; mother-in-law, Idell Legrand; brothers and sisters, Curtis Leathers (Ella Mae), Leon Leathers (Jackie), Joyce Herring (Freeman), Beulah Childs and Elaine Sloan; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Curl Leathers will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
