Obituary:

BOISE, Idaho - In loving memory of Viola Evelyn Barton Kukla who passed away peacefully on Oct. 11, 2011, at the age of 93 after suffering a stroke a few days earlier. She is now with her Lord and Savior in heaven.

Vi, as she was known, was born Feb. 2, 1918, in Pretty Prairie, Kansas, the youngest of 3 children, born to Joe and Clara Barton.

Mom grew up in Pretty Prairie graduating from Pretty Prairie High School where she was on the county championship winning basketball team. She married Marvin Waltner at the age of twenty and lived on the family farm where they started a family.

In addition to being a wife and homemaker, she took a job as a dental assistant shortly before the family moved to Scott City, Kansas in 1956. She truly enjoyed the dental profession and continued that work with a dentist in Scott City. She was even asked to write some articles for a national dentistry magazine at that time. The family moved to California in 1961 and after her divorce from Marvin she lived in Hawaii for a short time in the 1960's but soon returned to California where she met and married Albert Kukla in 1974, owner of the Dahl's motel in Oroville. They managed several nice motels and small apartments in Southern California until they retired in Anaheim in 1992, where they purchased a home in a senior mobile home park. Shortly thereafter, she joined a band called the "Kitchen Band" made up of a dozen or more seniors, average age of 80+, from their mobile home community. There was a piano player, a guitarist and washtub bass and everyone else played kazoo's decorated with kitchen utensils, hence, the name "Kitchen Band". They sang and played songs from the 30's and 40's performing at numerous senior centers in the area and even appeared on television. She thoroughly enjoyed that experience.

She lived by herself after Al passed away in 1996, however, developing health problems forced her to sell her home in 2008. She then spent the winters in Tustin California with her son Steve and daughter-in-law Sharon, and the summers in Boise, Idaho with her daughter Cheri. With her health declining, she was unable to return to California this last winter and eventually it became necessary to move her into an assisted living facility near her home in Boise.

Mom was a creative and artistic person completing many scenic oil paintings through the years. She also loved to write poetry and even won an award for one of her poems and went to New York City to receive that award. She loved music, sports, and liked to travel, but the times she cherished most was the time spent with family. Mom will always be remembered for her warm and friendly personality and that beautiful smile that came so easily to her face. That smile, and the wonderfully caring person she was, will be sorely missed by her family and all who knew her. She was a true inspiration; a person whose spirit could light up a room after she was gone.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Kukla; sister, Ethel Wingate; brother, Lawrence Barton; half-brothers, Charley and Clarence Roots. She leaves behind her children, Steve Waltner (Sharon) of Tustin, California and Cheri Lee of Boise, Idaho; five grandchildren, Mark Andrews, Kyle Andrews, Carrie Lee George, Steven T. Waltner and Robert Waltner; five great-grandchildren, Melanie Robojante, Elizabeth Waltner, Lucus Waltner, Ysabella Waltner, Kayla Andrews, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

A memorial service will be held at the Methodist Church in Pretty Prairie Nov. 5, 2011 at 11 a.m. with a graveside service immediately following at the Lone Star Cemetery. There will be a special video presentation, honoring Viola Kukla, at the Pretty Prairie Theater at 5 p.m.
