Henry D. Denison Jr., a member of an old Syracuse family, died Saturday at Castle Rest Nursing Home after a brief illness. He was 86 and formerly lived at 43 Jordan St., Skaneateles.

Mr. Denison was one of five children of Henry and Blanche Goodelle Denison. He grew up on a farm, Mineral Springs, that ran along James Street and north on Thompson Road past the current location of Oberdorfer Foundry. There was a race track and clubhouse on the farm where horse owners gathered to compete, according to family members.

Mr. Denison's grandfather, also named Henry, was instrumental in the building of the Erie Canal. The family oversaw its considerable real estate holdings from the Denison Building, 211 E. Fayette St., Syracuse.

Mr. Denison was a graduate of North High School. He was employed several years with First Trust & Deposit Co., Syracuse. He was a member of St. James Church, Skaneateles.

Mr. Denison was a life member of the Denison Society of Mystic Seaport, Connecticut.

Mr. Denison lived at Castle Rest since March. His sister, Henrietta, with whom he lived, died June 27.

Surviving are a cousin, Jean Prior of Novelty, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Episcopal Church, the Rev. J. Edward Putnam officiating. Burial is in Oakwood Cemetery, Syracuse.

Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Burns-Garfield Memorial Home, 3175 E. Genesee St., Syracuse.
