In October 1942 Paul F. Austin "Father" went to Marion, Indiana to work on a navy shoe contract for Daily Brothers Shoe Company he was a professional shoe cutter. Paul D. the oldest son left the International Shoe Company in Cape on 7 March 1943. Moved to Kansas City Missouri went to work for the WAR DEPARTMENT Area Ordnance Repair Shop a Civil Service job. Left Kansas City on 27 July 1943 for Cape Girardeau and lived with Carl & Celesta Middleton for a while and worked for Midwest Dairy Products Corp. He could not pass for the military service because of a lung condition.
In June 1943 Maggie and the rest of the boys Dean, Williard and Rolland joined Paul F. in Marion, Indiana. Later on 14 August 1943 Paul D. moved from Cape Girardeau, Missouri to live in Marion, Indiana because of his Mother's health.
In the Spring of 1946 due to Maggie's Heart Condition, Dr. Goldburg told Maggie and Paul they need to get out of the cold weather and move to Florida.
In September of 1946 Paul and Maggie loaded up and moved to Florida. Paul D. had married Helen May Madley that spring and decided to stay in Marion. Paul F. had bought a 1936 Chevrolet and an older Indian travel trailer and rebuilt both and left for Florida. We had a good trip to Florida, only one problem that was getting the car and trailer over Red Mountain in Birmingham Alabama. Maggie had to walk part way and the three boys had to push the car to the top. The car got a little hot by then, so we went to the bottom of the mountain and stopped for gas and water.
They asked Paul, how did you make it over the mountain, we have to pull most all of them over. Paul told them " Why we just drove right over•" I thought that was rather funny. We made the rest of the trip without Any problems. We settled at the Carolina Moon Mobile Home Park on Orange Blossom Trail, in Orlando, Florida on Highway 441. Paul F. went to work for Dr. Phillips fruit company as a paint foreman. Later he went into the Painting business for himself.
