Arrangements are under direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home, Lawton.
Virginia Kathleen (Elliott) Lambert passed away Monday, July 17, 2017 at the age of 101. She was the first of Lula and William Elliott's twelve children. She was born July 17, 1916, in Rutherford county North Carolina, during a hurricane. Weighing only 2 ½ pounds at birth, her survival was no small miracle. From the start she was to be a member of Tom Brokaw's "Greatest Generation". Her life experiences were to include WWI, the "Dust Bowl", the crash of 1929, the Great Depression, WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the current problems of today.
When she was five months old her parents moved to Oklahoma and settled in Minco. She was a good student and graduated from Minco High School. She attended Oklahoma College for women in Chickasha, Oklahoma and received a BS Degree in Commerce along with a lifetime Teachers Certificate in May 1938.
She taught school in Sterling. OK, Mooresville, NC, and Kings Mountain, NC. Following the start of WWII she returned to Oklahoma and taught in Mangum High School. In May 1945 she began working as a secretary for the American Legion in Oklahoma City.
On March 1, 1947, she married Denzille Lambert of Sterling, Oklahoma in Lawton. This union was to last for more than 62 years until Denzille"s death on April 21, 2009.
Denzille enlisted in the army in April 1947 and was sent to Japan. When he was reassigned to Fort Lewis, Washington, in 1949 Kathleen moved to Washington. After a cold miserable winter they returned to Oklahoma to begin life out of the army. Kathleen and Denzille bought a 160 acre farm in Comanche County, OK and proceeded to build a Grade A Dairy and a fine herd of Brown Swiss cattle.
In 1950, Kathleen re-entered her teaching career in Elgin, OK where she taught at the Elgin High school for the next 29 years. During these years she received many honors and awards, but she always thought the greatest reward of all was watching so many of her former students becoming successful in so many areas. She was always quick to recognize the achievements of others and to encourage all of her students to do their very best. Over the years she began to teach the children of former students. She retired in 1979.
Following their retirement Kathleen and Denzille were able to travel and revisit many places and explore other areas of the U.S. and Canada they had never seen. They leased out their pastures but remained on their farm until 2005 when they moved into Ten Oaks, an assisted living facility in Lawton. To their surprise and great joy many of her former students and friends continued to keep in touch with them through cards, letters, calls and personal visits.
Kathleen and Denzille were active members of the Sterling Baptist Church until health issues limited their mobility.
Preceding her in death, other than her beloved husband, were her Mother and Father, brothers William C. Elliott, Jr., John T. Elliott, James E. Elliott, Frank W. Elliott and Charles Lattimore Elliott, sisters Vertie Elliott, Anne Lou Basore, Julia Mae Brown, Mary Lee Roberts and Faye Anderson.
Surviving family members include her brother and sister in law, Aaron and Billie Elliott and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be remembered by many former students and numerous friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch, P.O. Box 1890, Amarillo, Texas 79174-0001
