SHELBY - Mr. Charles Lattimore Elliott, 80 of 3954 Five Points Road, died Monday, April 12, 2010.
The eighth of twelve children of William C. and Lula Lattimore Elliott, Charles was born on March 20, 1930 in Minco, Okla.
In 1949 he received a NROTC scholarship to attend the University of Missouri in Columbia, where he graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
He received his commission in the Navy and served his country from 1952 to 1974. While in the Navy, he attended George Washington University and earned a Master of Science degree in Admini-stration.
Charles served in the Pacific Fleet as Engineer Officer, on the U.S.S. Foss during the Korean Con-flict.
Later he served in the Atlantic Fleet as Executive Officer and Navigator of the U.S.S. Fearless.
He graduated from the Naval Intelligence Postgraduate School in Washington, D.C. and was Base Intelligence Officer-in-charge of the Intelligence Unit, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba during the Cuban Con-flict.
He was Damage Control Assistant in the U.S.S. Valley Forge at the start of the Vietnam Conflict; served on the Joint Staff, Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. European Command in France.
He was Executive Officer of the U.S.S. Catskill; and later as Lt. Commander he headed the Mine Division 92 during its 1970 Vietnam deployment.
He attended Defense Intelligence Agency in Washington, D.C. as Deputy Chief, Central Reference Division.
He retired from the Navy in July 1974 with the rank of Commander. His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Joint Services Commendation Medal and Navy Commendation Medal.
Charles joined the TRW Defense Systems Group in Redondo Beach, Calif. in 1974 as a computer systems analyst specializing in defense systems and later promoted to assistant project manager.
After retiring from TRW, he purchased his uncle's farm in N.C., built a house on the land that had been in his mother's family for more than 200 years.
He then began compiling family histories for the Elliott, Hoyle, Lattimore and Mooney families.
Charles is survived by his wife, Edla Maria Plosila Elliott, whom he married January 15, 1954; his four daughters, Cynthia Anne Elliott Jorgensen of Tuscon, Ariz., Cheri Elizabeth Elliott Smith of Den-ver, Colo., Carol Mary Elliott Hanna of Huntington Beach, Calif. and Christina Suzette Elliott Robinson of Lawndale, Calif.; six grandchildren; two brothers, Frank Wall Elliott of Louisiana and Aaron Cornwell Elliott of Vian, Okla.; five sisters, Kathleen Lambert, Judy Brown, Mary Lee Roberts and Faye Ander-son, all of Oklahoma. and Ester Jean Lacquement of Louisiana.
Funeral: A graveside memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 21, 11 a.m. at Lattimore Family Cemetery, on Five Points Road near Polkville.
