Leone Campbell Wallace, age 87, passed peacefully out of this life and into the next on October 14, 2011 at Alpine Meadows Assisted Living in Meridian, Idaho.
She was born in Lava Hot Springs, Idaho on November 1, 1923, the fifth of six children, to Fred H. Campbell and Sarah Violet Morrison. The family later moved to a farm in Hammett, Idaho where she grew up as most little girls do, working on the farm, going to school, playing football with the boys, basketball with the girls and tennis with both. She also played the coronet in the Glenns Ferry High School band.
After high school graduation, she chose to attend the Albion Normal School to become an elementary school teacher. After graduating she signed a contract with the Preston, Idaho School district and, at 19 years old, began teaching third grade.
After teaching one year in Preston, Leone decided to move to Boise. With World War II in full swing, Gowen Field Air Base desperately needed truck drivers. She drove all types of vehicles from staff cars to 2 ½ ton transport trucks.
It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Warren E. Wallace, at an Air Base dance. They dated for two months until Warren was transferred to Texas. She went back to teaching third grade at Whitney Elementary School in Boise. She taught there for two years until Warren was discharged from the Air Force at the end of the war. They were married in 1947 in Boise and soon began raising a family.
Leone wanted to stay at home with her children, but the teaching bug just wouldn't go away. She started a home-based Kindergarten called "The Busy Bee". She taught Kindergarten in her basement for eight years until it was authorized to be taught in the elementary schools. She was a charter member of the Kindergarten Association of Boise.
She went on to work for 11 years as a school secretary, first at Adams Elementary and then Hawthorne Elementary. However, the desire to teach again was overwhelming. In 1976 she updated her teaching certificate at Boise State University, graduating with a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education. Once again, she began teaching her beloved third grade at Hawthorne. She taught there for 10 years until health issues forced an early retirement.
Leone was a member of the Omicron Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma teacher's sorority. For twenty-eight years she attended the monthly meetings faithfully every month, never missing a single meeting, until shortly before her death.
Leone was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served faithfully in every position she was called to do. She taught lessons in the Primary, Relief Society and Sunday School organizations of the Church and also loved teaching and conducting music for both adults and children. She also worked in the Boise LDS Temple for many years until, once again, health issues forced her to stop.
She devoted the remainder of her life to serving others. She served her family, her church, her friends and her community tirelessly for 87 years. She was dearly loved and will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Leone was the mother of six children, 11 biological grandchildren, 21 step grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred H. and Sarah Violet Morrison Campbell; four siblings, Duard Campbell of Nampa, ID, Theoda Jensen of Pleasanton, CA, Adam Campbell of Ogden, UT and Vella Witters of Boise, ID; her husband, Warren E. Wallace; and four children, Luey Ann, Sherry Irene, Gene and Rosalie.
Survivors include two children, Janeen Cundick, of Boise, ID and Kent Wallace (Dollie) of Kuna, ID; one sister, Vonda Arnold, also of Boise, ID, and many nieces and nephews.
