Funeral Rites For Rev. Carl Mumford On Saturday
Rev. Carl Mumford, pastor emeritus of the First Lutheran church, Ellicott City, and for the past three years a resident of Gettysburg, Pa., died at the home of his sister, Mrs. Lester S. Birely, Thurmont, Wednesday morning at 8:30 o'clock after an immediate illness of two weeks. He was aged 70 years.
A son of the late John W. and Susan Cochrane Mumford, Middletown Valley, Rev. Mr. Mumford was pastor of the Lutheran church at Ellicott City for 24 years. He retired in 1945 because of ill health and at that time became pastor emeritus. He had served pastorates in Trenton, N. J., Littlestown, Pa., and Baltimore.
Rev. Mr. Mumford was a member of Columbia Lodge No. 58 A. F. and A. Masons, of Frederick, the Ellicott City Lodge No. 40 I. O. O. F., and the Jr. O. U. A. M., of Ellicott City. He was past president of the Rotary Club of Ellicott City.
Surviving him are three sons and daughters; Rev. Karl Luther Mumford, Glen Rock, Pa.; Rev. John David Mumford, Bucyrus, O.; Rev. Paul Jones Mumford, Turtle Creek, O.; Miss Lois Katherine Mumford and Miss Mary Ruth Mumford, both of Gettysburg. In addition, two sisters and two brothers also survive; Mrs. Milton Strobel and Mrs. Charles Mahoney, Braddock Heights; Roy Mumford, this city and Stanley Mumford, Middletown.
The body is at the funeral home where friends may call after noon today. Services will be held at the funeral home Saturday afternoon at two o'clock under the direction of Dr. Charles J. Hines, pastor of Emmanuel Lutheran church, Baltimore. Interment will be in the Middletown Lutheran cemetery.
