Mrs. Maude Beard Mumford, wife of Rev. E. Carl Mumford, of Ellicott City, formerly of this county, died suddenly at 4 a.m. Saturday at her home. Mrs. Mumford had suffered with a serious heart condition for several years but had recently seemed in better health and her death came as a severe shock to her family and friends.
Mrs. Mumford was the daughter of the late Rev. Martin Luther and Katharine Bowers Beard and was born in Burkittsville. Rev. Mr. Beard held successive pastorates to Burkittsville, Boonsboro, Middletown and Thurmont. Mrs. Mumford was well known not only in this county but throughout the state, having been quite active, until the past few years, in the work of the Lutheran church in Maryland. Rev. Mr. Mumford is pastor of the First Lutheran church in Ellicott City. His preceding pastorate was at Messiah Lutheran church, Baltimore.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Misses Lois and Mary Ruth, at home; three sons, Rev. Karl Luther Mumford, Woodbine; Rev. John David Mumford, Bucyrus, Ohio; and Rev. Paul J. Mumford, a student at the Lutheran Theological Seminary, Gettysburg, Pa. One brother, Rev. Paul B. Beard, Gettysburg, Pa.; three sisters, Mrs. Grace Beard Young, this city; Mrs. Lester S. Birely and Miss Hardee V. Beard. Thurmont; one aunt, Mrs. Charles Grove, Long Island, and two uncles, Rev. Dr. George S. Bowers, Catonsville, as well as a number of nieces and nephews in this vicinity, also survive.
She was a granddaughter of the late Rev. Henry Grove Bowers, pastor for twenty years of the Lutheran church in Jefferson.
The body will remain at Easton Sons' funeral home in Ellicott City until noon today when it will be removed to the church adjoining the home and lie in state. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock conducted by Rev. Charles J. Hines, pastor of Emmanuel Lutheran church, Baltimore, assisted by Rev. Fred A. Hightman, also of Baltimore. Interment in the Lutheran cemetery, Middletown.
