Samuel Houston Rinehart

Born 7 June 1840 in Clinton County, Indiana the youngest of the twelve children born to David Rinehart, born in PA on 15 Dec 1790 and to Rosanna Coyner b 1796 in VA. Sam Houston Rinehart died 28 August 1913. Samuel Houston or "Hout" as he was called by his relatives, was born on a farm in Perry Township, Clinton County, Indiana where he grew to manhood.

He Enlisted on 2 Aug 1862 in Company "G", 721st Volunteers. This Regiment was in command of Colonel A.O. Miller, who is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lebanon, Indiana, where Col. Miller's soldier friends have erected a monument to his memory. This Regiment became a part of the famous General Wilder's "Lightning Brigade", which were the first troops to use the new Spencer Rifle. On 25 May 1863, while out on scout duty and returning to his company Samuel Houston Rinehart was taken by mistake and shot. This wound in the leg was cause of trouble through out his life. He was discharged on 13 Aug 1863 and sent home. But Samuel Houston Rinehart re enlisted on 1 Jan 1864 into Company I, 135th Indiana Volunteers. His final discharge came on 2 Sept 1864.

Samuel Houston Rinehart married on 25 December 1864 to Nancy Ann Durham, the daughter of Dennis Durham and Rachel Loveless and the belle of the neighborhood. They went to housekeeping on 140 Acres of Perry Twp land. They moved in 1873 to a farm of 100 acres near Hazelrigg, Boone County, Indiana where they resided until the fall of 1898 when they moved to Lebanon, Indiana. "Squire Rinehart" as he was called by his friends, having had been the "Justice of the Peace" of Washington Twp a number of years, was a large man in stature, being six feet one inch tall and averaging 260 pounds.

Samuel Houston Rinehart was a firm believer in the Methodist Church and the Republican party.
