Juan Ignacio Guillermo Cota y Verdugo was born about 1768 at the Presidio de Loreto in Baja California [Sur], Nueva España. He was the son of Roque Jacinto Cota y León and Juana María Verdugo y Carrillo. Ignacio enlisted as a soldado de cuera and was posted to Alta California where he married (1) María Manuela de Jesús Elizalde y López at Mission San Gabriel on November 29, 1794 (SG Marriage 00532). After her death in 1803 he married (2) María Manuela Antonia Pérez y Morillo at Mission San Gabriel on July 14, 1805 (SG Marriage 00932). Ignacio died at Pueblo de los Ángeles, México, on December 22, 1844, and was buried in the Old Calvary Cemetery (LA Death 0....).


NOTE: Burials at the Plaza Church cemetery ceased about 1841 after the establishment of Old Calvary Cemetery.
