Mariano Antonio Cota y Verdugo was born about 1765 at Loreto Presidio in Baja California to Roque Jacinto de Cota and Juana Maria Verdugo. He married Maria Ygnacia Rivera on 30 November 1788 at Santa Barbara Presidio (BP Marriage 00005). After she died, he married Maria Guadalupe Marquez on 6 February 1816 at Mission San Gabriel (SG Marriage 01389). He died on 30 May 1819 at Mission San Buenaventura and was buried there on 31 May 1819 (SBV Death 02259).

Mariano was killed on May 30, 1819, at Mission San Buenaventura, Alta California, during a Chumash Native American uprising there.
