Ragnhild was born at a farm called Rottåshagen (61.49002 10.14280), in Ringebu Parish, Oppland County, Norway, the second of eight children of Ole Larsen and Anne Ellefsdatter. She was baptized at the Ringebu stave church June 8, 1890. They emigrated in 1893 (see her parents' bios), settling in Tanberg Township, Wilkin County, Minnesota, near Rothsay. Upon arrival at Rothsay, they shortened Rottåshagen to Hagen, and Ragnhild, who was apparently named for her maternal grandmother, adopted the nickname Rena before she started school. Rena and her older sister, Anna, started school the same day, October 4, 1898, at District 4 East, in Tanberg twp. Rena attended school there through the spring of 1903, moving to northwest North Dakota in October 1903.

Rena married William Harbig, Wednesday, April 15, 1908, possibly in Estevan, Saskatchewan. On the 1910 census, William and Rena lived in Hayland twp, Divide Co., and in 1920 in Stoneview twp, Divide Co. They moved to Alexandria, Minnesota, in the early 1950s, after some of their children had moved there. William died in Alexandria in 1952, and Rena in Alexandria in 1969. Both are buried in North Dakota.

William and Rena had 11 children, including two who died in infancy and one living in 2019. Rena's mitochondrial haplogroup was H13a1a (from 23andMe tests of more than eight of her female-line relatives).
