Even was born on a farm called Rottåshagen, in Ringebu Parish, Oppland County, Norway, the third of eight children born to Ole Larsen and Anne Ellefsdatter. (I haven't seen any records that give Even's full middle name.) They emigrated in 1893 (see his parents' bios), settling in Tanberg Township, Wilkin County, Minnesota, near Rothsay. Upon arrival at Rothsay, they shortened Rottåshagen to Hagen. Even started school at District 4 East, in Tanberg twp, and attended school there through the spring of 1903, moving to northwest North Dakota in the fall of 1903. At first, he lived with his parents and siblings in a sod house in section 1, Coal Field twp, Divide Co (see his parents' bios). By 1910, he no longer lived with his parents.
In 1913, when he was 21, Even bought land in section 7 of Keller Township, Burke County, North Dakota, about half a mile east of his parents' farm. On the 1915 ND census, Even's parents and brother John L and sister Helga live with him in Keller twp.
