Born & raised at James Ussery (grandfather) house just outside of (possibly part of in the modern era) Caledonia (Lowndes County), Mississippi. Rumored to have attended school in Columbus. First wife died young, leaving 3 very young daughters to be raised by their grandmothers until 1900. Jim had a daughter (Daisy Lee) by his second wife. His mother gave land to his sister and him upon their grandfather James Ussery's death, and they promptly sold the land. Family lore is that Jim moved to Columbus and operated a hotel (which didn't work out). Thereafter, he became a salesman, and was on the road a lot.
Lived in Millport, Ala. at some point, which would explain his burial site.
1910 Federal Census: West Point, Miss.
1930 Federal Census: Memphis, TN (daughter Reba's household)
1930 death at Home for Incurables, 1347 McLemore, Memphis (Thanks for update - Karen Winters)
I recently came into possession of the Carothers Bible, which I need to scan; also have Jim's cane & wife Fannie Myrtle's marble top side table, which I could take photos of if anyone is interested.
