Son of Robert "Amzi" Carothers & Martha Goad. Born in Maury County, TN. The 1850 Maury County, TN census lists Robert Carothers, age 50, farmer, wife Martha, age 38, and several children. The Carothers family migrated from Maury Co., TN to Pickens Co., AL, and eventually, Lowndes Co., MS. Amzi was a trader during the Civil War. It has been passed down that "he looked much like Teddy Roosevelt, rode a fine horse, and would slap his horse with his wide brim hat. He out-ran the Yankees who were going through one end of town as he rode out the Southern end . . .He outwitted them and was not captured. All of his sons were in the Civil War. His dearest wish was to have all of them come home."

"William Coleman Carothers ...came home (from the war) exhausted and ragged, to his parents one Sunday morning as they were on their way to church in their carriage. They didn't recognize him at first, as he approached the carriage. There was much rejoicing after which Coleman jumped into the carriage and went on to church with his parents and brothers and sisters." Coleman's father died a short time after the war ended. Martha lived until 1875.
Frances Parlee Ussery and William Coleman Carothers married the year the war ended. Coleman's wife said he "worked himself to death" during the hard times after the war.
