Confederate records and websites dedicated to two different regiments with soldiers from the area show what appear to be several different William C. Carothers as having served; which makes it difficult to determine which one he was.
"William Coleman Carothers ...came home (from the war) exhausted and ragged, to his parents one Sunday morning as they were on their way to church in their carriage. They didn't recognize him at first, as he approached the carriage. There was much rejoicing after which Coleman jumped into the carriage and went on to church with his parents and brothers and sisters." Coleman's father died a short time after the war ended. Martha lived until 1875.
Frances Parlee Ussery and William Coleman Carothers married the year the war ended. Coleman's wife said he "worked himself to death" during the hard times after the war.
"Grandma Parlee Carothers" helped raise 3 of their granddaughters whose mother met an untimely end; one of whom is my grandmother, who passed down family stories to her genealogist husband & daughter who transcribed them.
