Vernon was born Dec. 17, 1930, in Aurora, the son of Vernon L. and Ruth E. (Maier) Gates. He was a graduate of Genoa Township High School, Class of 1948, and served four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict, stationed in Hawaii.
Vernon is survived by three sisters, and two brothers.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Judy Lawrence; two brothers-in-law, Winston Evans and Don Eichler; and one sister-in-law, Linda Gates.
