GENOA – William C. Gates, 70, of Genoa, Ill., died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, at OSF St. Anthony's Medical Center, Rockford.

He was born Sept. 7, 1943, in Yorkville, the son of Vernon and Ruth (Maier) Gates.
Bill was an auto body technician for various local body shops in the Genoa area. He enjoyed woodworking and making handcrafted models and frames for his children and grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by his many friends and family.

Survivors include his daughter, Megan Gates; son, Patrick (Victoria) Gates; four grandsons, Colton, Kyle and Brandon Halter and Will Gates; three sisters, Barb Eichler, Della Evans and Janice (Leroy) Hoeft; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Linda; two brothers, Vernon "Sonny" and Lloyd; and one sister, Judy Lawrence.

His visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, at Slater-Butala Funeral Home in Genoa.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Genoa Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in care of Slater-Butala Funeral Home, 132 W. Main, Genoa, IL 60135.
