He was a PFC in the Army Air Corps during World War II, January 1945 to June 1946, stationed in Holland where he operated a bulldozer maintaining the Allied airfields. He was married to Lillian Weber on June 30, 1943 in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.
They had 4 children; Lynn Gail, Lawrence (who died as an infant), Anne and Sydney Jr.. They lived in the Milwaukee area where Sydney was a tradesman and Lillian had a home business baking cakes. The couple loved to square dance and travel.
Sydney died in Milwaukee on July 6, 1996 and is buried in Arlington Park Cemetery.
