Sydney Russell Andrist was born to Frederick and Hattie (Stark) Andrist near Plevna, Montana where they were homesteading. The family moved back to Dodge County, Minnesota and then on to Gurnee, Illinois and finally to Amberg, Wisconsin where his father Fred was a dairy farmer. His father's Andrist family originally came from Bern, Switzerland.

He was a PFC in the Army Air Corps during World War II, January 1945 to June 1946, stationed in Holland where he operated a bulldozer maintaining the Allied airfields. He was married to Lillian Weber on June 30, 1943 in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.

They had 4 children; Lynn Gail, Lawrence (who died as an infant), Anne and Sydney Jr.. They lived in the Milwaukee area where Sydney was a tradesman and Lillian had a home business baking cakes. The couple loved to square dance and travel.

Sydney died in Milwaukee on July 6, 1996 and is buried in Arlington Park Cemetery.
