Duane E. "Duke" Andrist was the youngest son of Frederick and Hattie (Stark) Andrist. He was born in rural Amberg, Wisconsin. He briefly served in the military but was discharged for medical reasons.

Duane became a union mason and then started his own company, Andrist Masonary in DesPlaines, Illinois. He married Pearl Hazel Lytle in October of 1954. Together they had two children. His wife died in 2009 and Duke moved to his cabin at Amberg, Wisconsin next door to where he was born. Surviving are his children and grandchildren and two sisters, Joyce and Arleen and also many special nieces and nephews.
