Gladys Nuckles Hess, 89, of Venia, went to be with the Lord Sept. 18 in an Abingdon hospital.Born July 5, 1918 in Venia, she was a daughter of the late G.W. "Doc" and Cora McFadden Nuckles.A lifelong resident of the Venia area, she was a charter member of the Venia Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. She worked at Council Elementary School as a cook for 21 years before retiring in 1994. She was a devoted wife, mother, and Christian. She was well known as "Ma" to everyone. She touched many lives through the years and will be missed by all who knew her.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Howard H. Hess; one son, Hassell Hess; two granddaughters, Michelle Maggard and Patricia "Pat" Stilwell; one son-in-law, Garland Austin; five brothers, Marshall, Dewey, Howard, Marvin, and Edward Nuckles; and three sisters, Ocie Nuckles, Vernie Nuckles and Ruby Johnson.Survivors: daughters, Draper Austin of Venia, Beulah Breeding and husband, Herman, of Lebanon, Wilma Sue Severt and husband, Tom, of Glendale Springs, NC; sons, Clinton Hess and wife, Francis, and Sam Hess and wife, Sandra, all of Rosedale; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sisters, Fannie Fletcher, Ada Farmer, Juanita Farmer, Edna Childress and Marie Nuckles, all of Rowe, Alice Farmer of Honaker; brothers, Arthur Nuckles of Davenport, Rev. Ellis Nuckles of Lebanon; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Sept. 21 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Guy Harris, Rev. Bennie Harris, and Rev. Ellis Nuckles officiating.Interment followed in the Austin Cemetery at Venia.
