Herman was the son of Johnny Askew and Susie Mae Brown Askew. He was educated in the Houston County School System. He was employed with the Tolleson Lumber Company in Perry, Georgia for a number of years. He was a member of Green Grove Baptist Church in Elko, Georgia.

He was married to Mary Askew, they had 11 children. He was preceded in death by 2 sons, Johnnie Askew and Danny J. Askew.

Wife: Mary Askew.
6 Sons: Herman Askew Jr, Leon Askew, Morris Askew, Douglas Askew, Emory Askew and David Askew.
3 Daughters: Johnny M. Watkins, Gloria Lane and Patrice Johnson.
5 Brothers: Henry Askew(Viola), Charlie "C.B." Askew(Annie Lee), James Askew, Richard Askew and Horace Parker.
1 Sister: Essie Mae McWilliam.
4 Daughters-In-Law: Bonita Askew, Golden Askew, Joyce Askew and Harlena Askew.
2 Sons-In-Law: Johnny Johnson and MacArthur Lane.
2 Brothers-In-Law: Hamph Whitfield(Doris) and Willie C. Whitfield(Justyne T.).
7 Sisters-In-Law: Mary Whitfield, Martha Whitfield, Rosa Parker, Lois Parker, Robin Askew, Inez Davis and Emory Davis.

Services were held Saturday, November 6,1999 at 2pm in the Sanctuary of Green Grove Baptist Church in Elko, Georgia with Rev Carlton Martin officiating.
