He was born February 7, 1914 in Elgin, the son of Albert and Grace Sommers.
Erwin participated in many of the local sporting activities as a youth and was one of the first Little League managers in Elgin. He was a member of the Elgin Turners.
Survivors include his wife, Elnora of Williams Bay; three children, Lary (Nancy) Sommers of West Chicago, Sue (Denis) Creadon of South Elgin, and Jeffrey (Gerri) Sommers of Doyles Town, PA; a step daughter, Diann (Lester) Neuman of Streamwood, IL; 11 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; a brother, James (Roberta) Sommers; and three sisters, Helen Powers, Doris Phillips, and Mary Singleton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Helen Sommers; and two sisters.
Funeral services will be at 10 AM Wednesday, March 31, 1999 in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. Burial will be in Bluff City Cemetery, Elgin.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.

Erwin was the son of Albert and Grace (Shimp) Sommers. He married Helen Martha Zimmerli and they had three children: Lary Lynn, Patricia Ann (Sue) and Jeffrey John. He married Lilly Elnora Nelson on October 4, 1966.
