Moved first to Sherman, Texas, where his wife Catherine died in 1888. Moved next to Montana where he owned a ranch outside of Bozeman. His eldest son, Ulysses Grant Nelson was born in October of 1867, and died the following year in Effingham, Illinois. Another son, Franklin was born in 1872, and married Eva P. Jack on February 19, 1901 in Bozeman. The whereabouts of Frank's grave are currently unknown, though he probably died in 1932 in Idaho.
