Jonathan served for the Ohio Militia in the War of 1812. He was married first to Mary Grimes (sometimes Grymes) on April 16, 1801, in Bourbon County, Kentucky. They had nine children before her death around 1828, including Jane, John, Sarah, Mary, William, Harvey, Benjamin Baker, and two as of yet unidentified daughters.
He married secondly, on January 4, 1829, Huldah Hunter. They had five more children: Cynthia, Hannah, Catherine, Jonathan Ross, Jr., and Washington.
Jonathan is almost certainly related to another Jonathan Ross Nelson (Find A Grave Memorial # 70964370) but it is not known how.

When I can read my title clear
To mansions in the skies,
I bid farewell to every fear,
And wipe my weeping eyes
